I had the fabulous opportunity to be the production photographer for The Late Night With Johnny P Show for their 99th show recorded on December 3 (see list of stations that carry Johnny P below). I had read on Johnny's Facebook page that the show being taped that night had scheduled a reunion of Johnny's band, None of Your Business (NYB), and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to go see the show being taped. I chatted up my friend Trisha, and she was in... On the evening of the taping, Trisha and I were hella early. My bad, but we got to watch all of the guests arrive. That was fun. After a while, the room started filling up and Johnny came out into the audience waiting area and asked if there was a photographer in the room. I was under the impression that he was looking for someone specific.
Turns out I was right. He was looking for his photographer, and apparently, he did not show. We did not know that at the time. Trisha and I got ourselves situated in the back row corner where we could make the most amount of noise without disturbing anyone (we're a gigglefest. It's not pretty). I was wondering if the photographer showed up yet, and just then Johnny stuck his head in the back door and said "Does anyone here have an iPhone 6+ who is a photographer?" I swear it to you as soon as he said 'iPhone" my hand shot up because I knew what he needed (insert angelic orchestra swell here). True story: I have been following Johnny on his personal Facebook page for a number of years because we have a billion mutual friends, and he always posted fun things to his page ("DO IT FOR ROCK AND ROOOOLLLLLLL!!!" lololl) as well as post for the promotions for his TV show. I told myself for years that I was going to find time to go ("John, I can't. I have bowling on Thursday nights." "FUCK BOWLING!! Come see my show!"). I always wondered what it would take to get the gig as the photographer on the show - especially since one of his former photographers owned a studio for whom I once interned. So the answer to the question for "What does it take to get a job taking photos for Late Night With Johnny P?" is get out of your comfort zone, do something different, and always hope that the photographer isn't going to show up. The show was fun; the guests were great. Johnny opened the show with his monologue, and he had several guests that included "Friendship Lights" creator Jack Giambianco (@friendshiplights), Comedian Craig Loydgren (@comediancraigL), Talent Agent Brooks (#talentinmotionmagazine), Apache Ramos (@apacheorphan, #apacheramos), who is one of the "Orphans" in the movie"The Warriors" ("We're gonna rain on you, Warriorsszzz!), "In the Life" host Steve Stanulis (@stvstanulis), and of course, the big reunion of the band "None of Your Business", who really had the place rockin' although I had to keep as still as a stone to take all of the photos (very tough to do lol), and I was seated between two dolly cameras trying to get clear photos of the show. No dancing today. Next time, I'm sure, when I'm prepared with the Nikon, the tripod, and the wireless remote. Epilogue: Because of this particular incident, I have had the privilege to work on the show as the main set photographer every month. I have begun coming to the set with my Nikon every month since. I was also inspired to go back to school for photography and Photoshop/Digital Media at the urging of my partner. John. He has also become interested in photography, and he came along with me on a photo shoot with real models just this past Sunday, which was also my birthday. That was up there with the best day ever! Thanks for not showing up to the studio, ex-photographer!
